Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
