Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.
PSG has now won the season-opening cup on 14 separate occasions.
The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.
The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the scoring early on.
Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.
In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty victory.
Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
